What is Early Childhood Education?

The early childhood education component of a family literacy program can be described as an age appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences. Programs may serve children from birth through 7 years of age, and for at least a 3-year age range.

What are the Attributes of a High Quality Family Literacy Early Childhood Program?

  • Through teacher-guided and child-initiated learning activities, the early childhood education program’s instructional design focuses on the child’s
    • cognitive (language and literacy) development

    • physical development, and

    • social and emotional development

  • Family literacy programs provide center-based early childhood education to children in the infant and toddler stages of development and to preschoolers who will be transitioning into pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and early primary grades.

High Quality Practice

High quality family literacy early childhood education program standards typically reflect current research, knowledge and shared beliefs about what constitutes quality early education. Goals of a quality family literacy early childhood program include:

  • The implementation of a research-based early childhood education curriculum that addresses child growth and development within the physical, social-emotional and cognitive domains.
  • The promotion of language and literacy development and its importance to future reading success.
  • The preparation of children for a successful transition to school and life experiences.
In creating the early childhood education component, family literacy
programs establish and promote standards of high-quality practice
for the early-age classroom.
