Adult Education and Family Literacy Work Together
One of the goals of adult education, as defined by Congress in the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) is to provide "parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency." Section 1231 of the Even Start portion of the No Child Left Behind legislation considers adult education as part of an integrated family literacy program that promotes academic achievement of both adults and their children.
Adult Education in the Family Literacy Setting
Adult education in the family literacy setting emphasizes the family as context and is integrated with the other family literacy components of early childhood education, parenting education and interactive parent-child literacy activities. For some parents, this begins with learning English in English as a Second Language classes. Other parents may be ready to improve their skills and knowledge in several content areas as they prepare for the high school Equivalency exam (a.k.a., the GED) or work towards a high school diploma. Adult education also provides parents with pre-employment skills to better prepare them for transition to the workforce and/or further education or training.
Benefits for the Children
It is important to note that children directly benefit from their parent's adult education experiences. National Center for Education Statistics researchers reported in America's Kindergartners
that as the level of the mother's education increases, so does her children's performance in reading, mathematics and general knowledge.
